COLUMBUS, Ga. - The No. 7 ranked Alabama softball team defeated the Maryland Terrapins 4-1 in a come-from-behind victory Friday at the NFCA Leadoff Classic Friday afternoon. Charlotte Morgan earned the victory for the Crimson Tide only allowing one run on four hits in her complete-game performance. With the win Alabama has now won eight straight and improves to 9-2 on the season.
Trailing Maryland 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Alabama offense came alive to take control of the game. With the bases loaded Whitney Larsen drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk that brought home Kayla Braud. Alabama then took the lead when Cassie Reilly-Boccia scored on a wild pitch, which became the eventual game-winning run.
The Crimson Tide got off to a slow start and had to play a little catch up. Maryland took advantage of an Alabama error and scored on a passed ball in the second inning. With two outs in the inning Terrapin pitcher Kerry Hickey scored from third when a Morgan pitch trickled off the glove of Kendall Dawson and got away.
Alabama tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning. The Crimson Tide again took advantage of a Terrapin miscue when Jazlyn Lunceford scored on an error at first base. Fenton laid down a bunt and it got away from the first baseman and enabled Lunceford to score from second.
Morgan allowed one run on four hits and struck out four to improve to 2-0 on the season. Both teams collected four hits apiece.
Alabama wraps up opening day at the Leadoff Classic against Iowa. The two teams meet at 4:00 p.m. at the South Commons Softball Fields.
