TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- University of Alabama senior Emeel Salem has been named to the 2007 ESPN the Magazine First-Team Academic All-American Baseball Team, as announced today by the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Salem, who owns a 3.85 grade point average with a double major in Marketing and Spanish, is the only Crimson Tide baseball player in school history to be named to ESPN the Magazine's First-Team Academic All-American Team for two consecutive years. Salem was also a first-team selection following his junior season in 2006.
Salem, who was named to the CoSIDA All-Academic District IV team in 2006 and 2007 as well, is also the second baseball player in Crimson Tide lore to be named the H. Boyd McWhorter Southeastern Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, following Dr. Jeff Laubenthal who won the award in 1993. Salem received a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship for winning the SEC's highest academic honor. He will be presented the award Thursday, May 31 at the SEC President's Dinner in Destin, Fla., as the league wraps up it's annual meetings.
Salem was named the 2006 and 2007 SEC Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league's 12 head baseball coaches and is a two-time member of the SEC Good Works Team (2006 and 2007) for his nearly 200 hours of community service at the Capstone.
He started all 57 games for Alabama this season and hit a team-best .351 (81-for-231) with seven home runs and 32 RBI. He also led the Crimson Tide in at-bats (231), runs scored (67), hits (81), triples (3), walks (30) and stolen bases (23).
A four-year starter, Salem played in 222 games, including 187 starts, and batted .330 (259-for-786) with 10 home runs and 89 RBI. He set UA career records for triples (13) and stolen bases (77) and ranks in the Top 10 all-time in games played, at-bats, runs scored and hits.
