Tuscaloosa, AL??The University of Alabama Soccer team picked up their first Southeastern Conference win of the year 1-0 over Mississippi State in front of 642 fans Friday night at the Alabama Soccer Complex. With tonight’s victory Bama was able to snap State’s four game streak without a loss over the Tide.
“Anytime you win in the SEC it’s a big win, we were able to pick up three SEC points tonight and that will go along way in getting us to Orange Beach for the SEC Tournament” head coach Don Staley said. “Last night at the team practice assistant coach Katie Barnes put in a new corner kick and that’s what we were able to score on tonight.”
In the 67th minute Alabama (5-8, 1-4 SEC) sophomore Jessica Deagan lined up the corner kick and lobed the ball in front of the goal. Several players were in front of the goal and the ball bounced off a Mississippi State players head into the goal to give Alabama the
only goal of the night.
Mississippi State (2-10, 1-4 SEC) had several opportunities to score thought out the night but was denied each time by Alabama’s sophomore goalkeeper Kara Gudmens. Mississippi State fired ten shots on the night, four on goal but was unable to get one past Gudmens who recorded her fifth shutout of the season.
Alabama will be home again on Sunday afternoon against Ole Miss at 1:00 p.m. The game can be seen live on Fox Sports South.
