Baton Rouge, LA?? The University of Alabama wrapped their weekend road trip in the Southeastern Conference with a 4-2 loss at LSU Sunday afternoon.
“LSU is a strong and technical team” head coach Don Staley said. “I am proud of the effort our team put fourth today. It would have been easy to roll over after getting down 3-0 at halftime but we battled back and put up a fight.”
The Tigers started the scoring at the 30:54 mark when Roslyn Jones broke away from the Alabama defense and fired a shot that Alabama goalkeeper Kara Gudmens defected with her hand into the right post and rolled very slowly over the goal line to make the score 1-0. LSU struck again three minutes later when Michelle Makansiki shot wide left and Rachel Yepez chipped the rebound into the right side of the net for a 2-0 lead.
LSU added to their lead in the seventeenth minute when Roslyn Jones was able to shoot into the back of the net for her second goal on the day.
In the79th minute Alabama junior Jordan O’Banion scored her fourth goal of the season to cut the LSU lead to 3-1. O’Banion found the back of the net on a penalty kick where she was able to beat the LSU keeper on the left side of the net.
In the 84th minute LSU’s Malorie Rutledge lined up the penalty kick and beat Gudmens on the left side of the net.
With five minutes remaining in the game Alabama’s Jessica Deegan lined a corner kick in front of the net where Suzanne Baker knocked in the Tide’s second goal of the game.
Alabama concluded their longest road trip of the year, at Arkansas on Friday and LSU today. The Tide traveled over 3,000 miles on planes and buses through five states this weekend. Through all that travel there was one lost bag, belonging to freshman Courtney Casto, which arrived just minutes before the Tide’s game against LSU and one broken down bus.
Bama will continue on the road in the SEC next weekend as they visit Tennessee on Friday. They return home to the Alabama Soccer Complex to welcome the Georgia Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon.
