Lexington, KY?? The University of Alabama soccer team finished off the second leg of a Southeastern Conference road trip with a 3-0 loss at Kentucky Sunday afternoon.
“This was a disappointing loss,” Alabama head coach Don Staley said. “Kentucky was able to capitalize today and they kept coming at us and creating problems for us. We have put ourselves in a deep hole now in the SEC. We look forward to coming home and playing Mississippi State and Ole Miss.”
Kentucky jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 12 minutes into the game on a goal by Guileana Lopez. In the 17th minute, Alabama senior Gillian Kilburn made an attempt to tie the game but her goal was called off on an offsides penalty.
Kentucky took a 2-0 lead at 32:14 in the second half when Betsy Holbrook knocked in a cross pass from eight yards out. Megan Jones knocked in the Wildcats final goal with 7:50 left in the game.
Alabama falls to 4-8 and 0-4 in the SEC. Kentucky picked up their first SEC win of the year and improved to 5-6-1 (1-2 SEC). Alabama has not defeated Kentucky since the 1998 season (0-5-1).
The Tide will return home on Friday, October 6 against SEC west foe Mississippi State at 7:00 p.m.
