TUSCALOOSA, AL—The University of Alabama women's soccer team could not get the breaks it needed, while the University of Florida did as the Tide dropped a 2-0 match to the Gators.
Florida (8-7-2, 5-2-1) struck early on but not without a lucky bounce off a Tide defender. The Gators sent a service in front of the goal that Tide goalie Courtney Rogers knocked out, however Stephanie Freeman was there for a put back but her shot deflected off an Alabama defender and was misdirected past Rogers for a 1-0 UF lead.
The Tide (11-5-1, 2-4-1) had an opportunity to tie the game when the Gators committed a foul inside the box drawing a penalty kick for Alabama. Florida goalie Jordan Kellgren guessed right on Katie French's shot corralling it to keep the Gator lead.
Lady luck was on Florida's side again in the second half when Danielle Murphy sent a corner kick in front of the Tide goal that glanced off an Alabama defender and over the head of Rogers for a 2-0 lead.
Florida had a chance to increase its lead when they took a PK of their but Rogers was right there to knock the shot down. The rebound went right back to Murphy, who took the PK, and sent another line drive right to Rogers who pulled it in to thwart the Gator attempt.
The Tide continued to keep the pressure on in the second half, but they were turned away each time. Alabama finished the night with two more shots than Florida, while both teams had six shots on goal with two of the Gators coming on the two own-goals.
Alabama will close out its home schedule on Sunday when the Tide hosts the South Carolina Gamecocks. It will be the final time Crimson Tide fans will get an opportunity to see seniors Michele Evans, Missy Keller, Courtney Rogers and Kim Zarzour play at the UA Soccer complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. with Senior Day ceremonies being conducted prior to kickoff.
