TUSCALOOSA, AL—The University of Alabama women's soccer team (11-6-1, 2-5-1) battled rainy conditions and the emotion of Senior Day but came up on the short end of a 2-1 score against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
The Gamecocks drew (11-5-2, 4-3-2) first blood 24 minutes into the match when Kimmy Criss sent a pass through the Alabama defense to Amanda Thurber who beat Alabama goalie Courtney Rogers for a 1-0 USC lead.
Carolina added to its lead with 5:45 left in the match when Jessica Julin floated a 30-yarder over the head of Rogers.
Alabama answered with a flurry of scoring opportunities late in the match and finally converted with 51 seconds left. Missy Keller took a direct kick from just inside the midfield stripe and sent towards the right post. Rebecca Baker then went high in the air to head the ball just inside the left post cutting the lead in half.
Bama Head Coach Don Staley pulled Rogers after the Alabama goal in favor of an 11th attacker, but time ran out on the Tide as they dropped their third consecutive match.
"We fought really hard till the end, but we just ran out of time," said Staley. "I am sorry my seniors had to go out at home on a loss like this."
Alabama will close out both its conference and regular season schedules next weekend when the team travels across the state to take on the Auburn Tigers in a Friday night match. The team will then travel to north to Martin, Tennessee where it will close out its regular season schedule.
