Five children; sons: Brandon, born 6-23-91; Cameron, born 7-5-95; Aaron, born 9-25-96; and Dillon, born 10-24-97. One daughter, Mary Layson, born 10-5-92.
High School: Graduated from Mobile[apos]s UMS-Wright Prep in 1982; played there one season 21.6 ppg/11.2 rpg); National Honor Society; Inducted into UMS-Wright[apos]s Hall of Fame; 2004 UMS Alumnus of the Year; also attended Carterville High School in Carterville, Illinois (14 ppg/4 apg); Carbondale High School in Carbondale, Illinois (16 ppg/6 apg)

Murray State advanced to the NCAA tournament in 1997 and again in 1998 and made the NIT in his first season there in 1996; He was first OVC coach to win three OVC titles in only three seasons; Gottfried coached Racers to three Ohio Valley Conference Championships, all three years he was there.
