The Southeastern Conference
Alabama owns two Southeastern Conference team titles since swimming and diving was introduced at the Capstone in 1960. The first came in 1982 and the second in 1987. The Crimson Tide has been in the runner-up position 11 times, first in 1963 and most recently in 1985.
Individually, Alabama has 105 SEC titles, the first coming in 1962 when John Rangley won the 50 free. In 2019, The Tide won six SEC crowns - including three relays and three individual titles.
Four Tide swimmers are tied for the most individual SEC titles by an Alabama athlete in a career. Vlad Polyakov, Jonty Skinner, Gregg Higginson and Jon Olsen all claimed five championships during their tenures. Robert Howard (50 and 100 freestyle) and Zane Waddell (100 backstroke) claimed three individual titles in 2019.
The Tide also lays claim to 16 relay titles. In 1964, the 400 freestyle relay of Don Peck, Joseph Putman, Jack Horn and Dennis Bretheron won Alabama's first conference title in a time of 3:25.0.
In 2019, Alabama won three relay championships, including the 200 medley relay (Waddell, Laurent Bams, Knox Auerbach and Howard), the 200 freestyle relay (Waddell, Sam DiSette, Jack Blake and Howard) and the 400 freestyle relay (Jonathan Berneburg, Waddell, Auerbach and Howard).
Among Alabama's three relay titles in 2019, two, the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays, went for SEC Championship records.
Howard closed out his Crimson Tide career in 2019 by dominating the Southeastern Conference awards, earning the SEC Male Swimmer of the Year, the SEC Commissioner's Trophy, SEC Swimming and Diving Scholar- Athlete of the Year and the SEC Championships Swimmer of the Meet. Winner of an SEC Postgraduate scholarship, the senior was the first in SEC history to earn both swimmer and scholar-athlete of the year in the same season.
First team All-SEC honorees number 79 on the Tide's all-time roster. In the classroom, Alabama swimmers have earned a place on the SEC Academic Honor Roll more than 200 times since the award's inception in 1984. The Crimson Tide had a program-high 23 athletes named to the squad in 2011.
The Southeastern Conference has long been one of the nation's premiere athletic conferences, both in overall strength and in nearly every sport individually. Swimming and diving is certainly no exception. The SEC has placed at least one team in the top 10 of the NCAA Championships every year since 1969, when Florida placed ninth. The conference's high watermark for teams in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships came in 2016 when six SEC teams earned a place in the final 10.
Eleven times in the history of the NCAA Championships an SEC team has come away with the team title. Tennessee won the first in 1978. Florida won back-to-back titles in 1983 and 1984. In 1997, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009 Auburn came away with the crown. Alabama, Auburn, Florida and Tennessee have all finished in the runner-up position at the NCAA Championships.
Individually, sprinting is the conference's forte as SEC athletes have won the 50 freestyle 16 times and the 100 freestyle NCAA title 13 times. All told, the SEC owns more than 100 individual NCAA titles and 30-plus relay titles. Currently, the SEC holds six NCAA records.
There are 14 SEC schools: Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt. Ten SEC schools currently sponsor men's swimming and diving teams: Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas A&M.

When Alabama won the 1985 Southeastern Conference team title, it became the first team to unseat the University of Florida as the SEC champion. The Crimson Tide has won 35 individual SEC titles since Barbara Logan won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving championships in 1981. The latest Tide titles came in 2015 when Kaylin Burchell won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke on the way to earning SEC Championships Swimmer of the Meet honors. Anne Poleska won an Alabama-best six SEC titles during her 2001-03, 05 career.
The Tide's most recent SEC record came in 2009 when Carrie Dragland set the 3-meter diving mark. Four relay titles belong to Alabama. The first came in 1983 when the Tide won the 800 free relay. Alabama claims 16 first team All-SEC selections, Logan being the first while Burchell is the latest. Poleska was named the 2001 SEC Freshman of the Year while Logan, Lane Bassham and Dragland have all been crowned SEC Diver of the Year, in 1981, 2004 and 2009, respectively. Paige McCleary and Dragland were also named SEC Freshman Diver of the Year in 2011 and 2009, respectively.
Academically, the Tide has earned SEC Academic Honor Roll recognition more than 300 times since 1984. Alabama has led the league in this award three times in the past six years, with 26 honors in 2009 and a program- best 27 in 2010 and 2014.
The SEC has long been one of the nation's premiere athletic conferences both in overall strength and in nearly every sport and swimming and diving is certainly no exception. The SEC has placed at least one team in the top 10 of the NCAA Championships every year since the first title tilt in 1982. That first championship had four SEC teams among the top 10, including No. 1 Florida, No. 4 Auburn, No. 9 Alabama and No. 10 Tennessee.
Individually, SEC athletes have won more than 100 NCAA titles. The conference has taken home 14 NCAA team titles, including nine in a row from 1999-2007.
The conference put six teams in the national top 10 in 2001 and at least five teams in the top 25 the past 10 seasons.
There are 14 SEC schools: Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt. A dozen SEC schools currently sponsor women's swimming and diving teams: Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt.
