The Crimson Tide’s 11-game winning streak over the Trojans was snapped on Tuesday
TROY, Ala. – No. 19 Alabama baseball (32-17) saw Troy (24-25) rally for six runs over its final two turns at the plate, as the Crimson Tide was defeated 6-1 by the Trojans on Tuesday at Riddle-Pace Field.
Jason Torres drove in Alabama's only run, as his solo home run stood as the only run of the contest for five-plus innings. Torres would eventually finish 1-for-3 with the longball. Eric Hines was the only man in the Tide lineup to manage multiple hits, with the freshman recording a pair of singles to encompass his 2-for-4 night. As well, Justin Lebron was responsible for a double to close his 1-for-4 line. Alabama collected only four hits and one walk while striking out 11 times on Tuesday.
JT Blackwood was nearly flawless operating as the opener in his seventh start of the spring, as the senior surrendered only one hit across 4.0 scoreless frames, adding a pair of strikeouts. Blackwood faced the minimum of 12 batters over his 4.0 shutout innings, as a caught stealing in the 2nd erased a one-out single. Austin Morris worked around two walks and added a strikeout in his 0.2-inning appearance, while Evan Steckmesser also stranded two walks and struck out two across his 1.0 inning.
Connor Lehman (1-1) suffered the loss after being responsible for the go-ahead run in the 7th. Lehman recorded only one out, allowing two hits and a walk, later being on the hook for two earned runs. Sam Mitchell, Owen Sarna and Bobby Alcock tossed the final 2.0 innings, as the threesome combined to surrender four runs (three earned) on four hits, two walks and one hit-by-pitch.
From Head Coach Rob Vaughn
"I thought (JT) Blackwood was outstanding. Just really good at mixing pitches, tunneling them with strikes, just an outstanding job by him. (Jason) Torres gets a big swing to give us the lead, but (Troy's) guys made a ton of big pitches. They also missed a ton out over the heart of the plate and we just didn't make them pay for it. They punched us out 11 times and only put us on for free once, and we only punched them out five times and put them on for free eight times, so that became the difference late. We flirted with it there in the middle innings by putting some guys on for free but we made some big pitches to get out of it, but at the end of the day, if you continue to do that, they're eventually going to cash it in. They played better than we did. They're at-bats were tougher, they made bigger pitches than we did, their stuff on the mound was better, and when you do that, you're going to get beat."
How It Happened
- T2 | With two outs, Jason Torres lifted a solo home run to left. (1-0, Alabama)
- B7 | Steven Meier led off the inning with an infield single before Drew Nelson worked a four-pitch walk. After a groundout pushed both men into scoring position, pinch-hitter Houston Markham grounded out to the pitcher. With two on and two outs, a wild pitch reached the backstop, allowing Meier to score. Sean Darnell was then hit by a pitch, putting men on the corners. Aaron Piasecki proceeded to line a two-run double off the wall in right-center, scoring two. (3-1, Troy)
- B8 | Jimmy Janicki doubled to right field with one out and quickly scored after Meier drove him in with a single to center. Drew Nelson then walked, though an attempted delayed steal saw two men at second base, with Alabama creating an out between second and third as a result of the miscommunication. However, Nolan Book would single through the left side to drive in Nelson. Following Nelson's successful steal of second, a Markham groundball at shortstop was misplayed, as an errant throw allowed Book to score. (6-1, Troy)
