Kiprop closed with a come-from-behind sprint down the home stretch to secure his fourth consecutive 10,000-meter title and the eighth straight for the Crimson Tide in the event
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Despite falling to second in the final laps, Alabama track and field's Victor Kiprop found an extra gear and used a come-from-behind sprint to secure his fourth consecutive 10,000-meter title (30:10.85), as all four Crimson Tide runners clocked a top-eight, scoring finish in the event to close the opening day of the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships.
Kiprop is the first student-athlete in league history to win the men's 10,000m run four consecutive years. Additionally, it's the Crimson Tide's eighth straight title in the event. Dismus Lokira (third, 30:19.60), Hillary Cheruiyot (sixth, 30:26.29) and Dennis Kipruto (eighth, 30:31.47) followed Kiprop as the Tide's distance contingent accumulated 20 points towards the UA men's team standings – the second highest of the day by any school.
Earlier in the day, men's hammer thrower RJ Decker used a PR-setting, 68.39-meter throw (224-2) on his second attempt to win bronze, while women's javelin thrower Ellie Partrick needed only her first throw to finish sixth (51.82m | 170-0). Both student-athletes moved to No. 5 all-time in school history.
After the first day of the heptathlon and decathlon, Katelyn Adel sits in second place with 3,404 points, as John Landers' 3,661-point total has him in eighth, respectively. Adel rattled off consecutive first-place finishes in the high jump (1.74m | 5-8.50) and the shot put (12.92m | 42-4.75), as her shot put mark was also part of back-to-back PR performances (200m – 25.22). Landers' first day of competition featured a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter dash (11.12) and a fourth-place showing in the 400 meters (48.97).
UA concluded the first day of competition with the men in second place with 26 points, while the women sit in 12th with three points.
