
Kiprop, Olemomoi Crowned Champions on Opening Day of 2024 SEC Outdoor Championships

Victor Kiprop and Hilda Olemomoi claimed gold in their respective 10,000-meter races
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – On the opening day of the 2024 SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Victor Kiprop and Hilda Olemomoi went back-to-back in the final two events of the night, claiming gold in their respective 10,000-meter races.
Kiprop claimed the Tide's first gold of the weekend, crossing the line in 29:36.95. His victory marked the third-straight year the junior claimed gold in the men's 10,000-meter race, and the seventh-straight gold the Crimson Tide men have accumulated – the longest active streak in the SEC. Kiprop is also the first student-athlete in conference history to win three straight golds in the men's 10,000-meter run.
Olemomoi, shortly thereafter, collected her first career SEC gold medal in the women's 10,000-meter, recording a 33:47.19.
Chris Robinson (48.85), Corde Long (49.07) and Clayton Elder (50.50) qualified for Saturday's men's 400-meter hurdles final after their performances in the preliminary round. Tarsis Orogot would also qualify for the men's 200-meter final after recording a 20.18.
After the first day of competition, the Crimson Tide men sit in second with 18 points, while the UA women sit in third with 17 points.
CRIMSON TIDE TOP FINISHES
- Ruben Banks finished fifth in the men's hammer throw with a 62.40m (204-08) throw, scoring four points
- Chandler Hayden (60.84m | 199-07) added three points to the women's total with a sixth-place finish in the women's hammer throw
- Dennis Kipruto finished fourth (30:19.08) in the men's 10,000-meter run, adding five points to the team total
- Victor Kiprop claimed gold in the men's 10,000-meter clocking a 29:36.95, adding 10 points to the team total
- Third-straight year Kiprop has claimed gold in the 10,000m
- First student-athlete in SEC history to win three-straight men's 10,000m titles
- Seventh-straight 10,000-meter victory for the Crimson Tide men – longest active SEC streak
- Brenda Tuwei added four points to the team total with a fifth-place finish (34:12.02) in the women's 10,000-meter
- Hilda Olemomoi claimed her first SEC gold medal in the women's 10,000-meter after recording a 33:47.19, adding 10 points to the team total
