The Crimson Tide was shut out for the first time this season
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Alabama baseball was blanked by 12th-ranked Kentucky, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at Kentucky Proud Park. The loss clinched the series for the Wildcats and moved the 11th-ranked Crimson Tide to 22-9 on the season and 4-7 in Southeastern Conference play.
Kentucky built a 3-0 lead after three frames, plating one in the first and two in the second. The Wildcats added four in the sixth to make it a 7-0 affair, the eventual final. The shutout loss was the Tide's first this season.
Dominic Niman (6-2) tossed a complete game for the shutout win. The graduate allowed just three hits and did not issue a walk while striking out seven across 100 total pitches. Greg Farone (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season despite a solid outing on the mound. The senior gave up three runs on three hits and five walks with six strikeouts across 5.0 innings pitched.
From Head Coach Rob Vaughn
"(Dominic Niman) did a really good job of attacking us. Every pitch was competitive, he was around the zone and he was mixing pitches well. He just did a good job overall. I thought the longer the game went and the more we didn't have stuff going our way, the more we started pressing. We have to do a good job of regrouping and coming out tomorrow as a better version of ourselves."
How It Happened
- B1 | The Wildcats used a single, stolen base and a lineout to move the leadoff man to third before a sacrifice fly got UK on the board. (1-0, Kentucky)
- B3 | A two-run homer by Ryan Waldschmidt widened the gap. (3-0, Kentucky)
- B6 | Three hits and two free passes led to four runs for the Wildcats, highlighted by a two-run home run from Grant Smith. (7-0, Kentucky)
Postgame Notes
- Gage Miller has reached base safely in all 30 games that he has played in. That is the longest reached base streak by a Crimson Tide hitter since Taylor Dugas' 34-game streak to start the 2012 season. The 34-game stretch was part of Dugas' 46-game streak overall that included the final 12 games of the 2011 campaign.
- Ian Petrutz has reached base in 19 consecutive games. He has also gotten on base in all 11 SEC contests so far.
- Petrutz has recorded a hit in his last eight games. Over that stretch, the junior is batting .469 (15-32) with five doubles, two home runs, eight RBI, six runs scored and four walks.
The two teams will meet on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT to close out the weekend series. Alabama will look to freshman left-hander Zane Adams in the start while Kentucky counters with righty Mason Moore, a junior. Fans can catch the series finale live on SEC Network.
