Three Inside the Top Five to Help Give Alabama the Opening Round Lead after Day One at The Hayt

Canon Claycomb holds a share of the clubhouse lead 3-under after round one
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Three Alabama men's golfers are among the top five individuals helping the No. 21 Crimson Tide to the first round lead Saturday at The Hayt. As a team, Alabama is at 6-under par 282, marking the third time in four rounds played this spring that the Tide has carded a sub-par score.
Canon Claycomb finished the day at 3-under 69, to hold a share of the overall lead entering Sunday's second round. Jonathan Griz and Jones Free also finished under par on the day with identical scores of 2-under par 70.
The second round of The Hayt, hosted by North Florida, will take place at the par 72, 6,966-yard Sawgrass Country Club.
Individual Results
- Canon Claycomb collected an eagle and three birdies, along with a pair of bogeys, to finish at 3-under par
- Claycomb shares the lead with Jacksonville's Alexandre Vandermoten and Ohio State's Neal Shipley
- Jonathan Griz and Jones Free also carded matching rounds, with Griz collecting four birdies with two bogeys while Free had just one bogey compared to three birdies
- JP Cave (73) and Thomas Ponder (73) are tied for 15th at 1-over par for the day
- Austin Coggin, who is playing as an individual, finished at 6-over 78 and is in a tie for 54th
Team Results
- Alabama holds a four-shot lead over No. 26 Ohio State (-2) as both squads are the only teams in the 14-team field to finish the day below par
- Top-ranked North Carolina (+1) is in third, with No. 13 Virginia (+6) and Louisville (+7) rounding out the top five
- The 14-team field features nine teams ranked among the top-60 in the most recent Spikemark Golf Rankings
