
Doris Lemngole Named USTFCCCA National Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year

The standout sophomore earned the honor after becoming the second Crimson Tide runner to claim an NCAA Cross Country individual title
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named Doris Lemngole the Lance Harter National Women's Athlete of the Year.
Lemngole, a sophomore from West Pokot County, Kenya, used a late-race breakaway at the 2024 NCAA Cross Country Championships in Madison, Wisc., to capture her first cross country crown and second individual, national title in five months (outdoor 3,000m steeplechase). Clocking 19:21.0, the UA phenom became only the second Crimson Tide runner to ever claim an NCAA Cross Country individual title, joining program legend Mercy Chelangat who won Alabama's first in 2020.

- Lemngole's national championship-winning performance marked the second time in five years that an Alabama women's distance runner claimed the title, following Mercy Chelangat in 2020
- Lemngole is the second Crimson Tide student-athlete to be named the National Women's Athlete of the Year, following Chelangat in 2020
- Lemngole joins Parker Valby (Florida | 2023), Chelangat (Alabama | 2020) and Karissa Schweizer (Missouri | 2016) as the only representatives from a Southeastern Conference school to be named the USTFCCCA National Women's Athlete of the Year
- The announcement follows Lemngole receiving 2024 SEC Women's Runner of the Year honors, in addition to earning women's South Region Athlete of the Year recognition by the USTFCCCA
- Additionally, Lemngole was named the SEC Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year before also landing on the First-Team All-SEC and USTFCCCA All-America lists
