Charlie Hawke was named the Southeastern Conference Men’s Swimmer of the Week while Gaby Van Brunt was tabbed the women’s freshman honoree
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Charlie Hawke and Gaby Van Brunt earned Southeastern Conference Weekly honors for pacing the No. 19/18 Alabama men's and women's swimming and diving team to a win over Kentucky, the league office announced Tuesday. Hawke was named the Men's SEC Swimmer of the Week, while Van Brunt was named the Women's Freshman of the Week as both student-athletes picked up their first weekly nod by the conference this season.
With the help of Hawke and Van Brunt, the Tide claimed 22 event wins in its sweep over Kentucky.
Charlie Hawke, Men's SEC Swimmer of the Week
- Scored 43 points for Alabama in the Tide's win over Kentucky
- Won a pair of individual freestyle events and two relay events to lead Alabama to a dominant 175-144 victory
- Won the 200 freestyle by over a second with a time of 1:33.34
- Took the top time in the 500 freestyle with over a two-second gap, going 4:22.39 in the event
- Posted the fastest 100 freestyle split (42.70) in the 400 freestyle relay, regardless of position in the race, as he was one of only two swimmers to break 43 seconds
- His performance in the 400 freestyle relay led the team to a first-place finish with a time of 2:52.26
- Went 19.32 as the last leg of the 200 medley relay, fastest freestyle split in the event, as UA won the race with a 1:26.16
- Rounded out the meet with the third-fastest time in the 200 butterfly with a 1:46.81
- Holds the NCAA's fastest time in the 200 freestyle (1:31.30), in addition to ranking fourth in the 500 free (4:12.91), eighth in the 100 freestyle (42.31), third in the 400 freestyle relay (2:47.95), fifth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:17.48) and sixth in the 400 medley relay (3:07.12)
Gaby Van Brunt, Women's SEC Freshman of the Week
- Scored 33 points for Alabama in the dual meet
- Recorded a relay win and two individual victories against the Wildcats
- Posted a career-best time in the 100 butterfly, dropping her time by three tenths of a second for a 52.60
- Won the 100 butterfly by six tenths of a second with the second-place swimmer recording a 53.29
- Captured the fastest time in the 200 butterfly with a 1:57.71, almost two seconds faster than second place
- Helped the 200 medley relay team to a first-place finish with a 23.47 butterfly split, the fastest butterfly split in the event
- Captured a season-best time in the 100 backstroke, clocking a 53.69 for a fourth-place finish
- Anchored the 400 freestyle relay as the team posted a 3:23.65 time for a third place finish
