Men's Basketball Headed to Louisville for the Sweet 16
Following wins over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Maryland in Birmingham, our men's basketball team is off to the Louisville Regional for the Sweet 16. This will be the team's ninth appearance in the NCAA round of 16 and second under Coach Oats. Friday's game against fifth-seeded San Diego State is scheduled to tip at 5:30 p.m. CT on TBS.
Women's Swimming and Diving Makes Four Podium Appearances at NCAAs
The Crimson Tide brought some hardware back from Knoxville, making four podium appearances at the 2023 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Kensey McMahon struck gold twice, winning both the 500 freestyle and 1650 freestyle, becoming the first in program history to win multiple individual titles in the same year. Additional podium finishes included the 200 medley relay contingent of Rhyan White, Avery Wiseman, Emily Jones and Kalia Antoniou, who finished seventh, along with White's eighth-place finish in the 100 backstroke. Overall, the women finished 14th as a team for its third-consecutive top-15 finish at NCAAs. This week, the men take center stage in Minneapolis, with the meet beginning on Wednesday.
Track and Field Posts Pair of Top-10 Finishes at NCAA Indoors
Our track and field teams recently earned a pair of top-10 finishes at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, with the women tying for seventh place and the men tying for ninth. On day one of the championship meet, Hilda Olemomoi and Mercy Chelangat finished second and third, respectively, in the women's 5,000-meter final, while Bobby Colantonio Jr. followed with a silver finish in the men's weight throw. Day two saw a pair of additional silver and bronze trophies hoisted by the Tide as Flomena Asekol finished third in the women's mile and Tarsis Orogot second in the 200-meter final. With the indoor season wrapped up, Coach Waters' squad turns its focus to the outdoor season, which begins this weekend in Starkville at the Bulldog Relays.
Gymnastics Finishes Second at SEC Championships; Headed to Norman for NCAAs
A season-high tying 197.925 secured our gymnastics team a runner-up finish at the SEC Championships over the weekend in Duluth, Georgia. Additionally, Gabby Gladieux tied for the SEC individual title with a 9.950 on vault, while Luisa Blanco finished second in the all-around (39.675) and balance beam (9.950) and Lilly Hudson took second on the floor exercise (9.950). Next up, Coach Johnston's team heads to Oklahoma as the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Norman Regional, taking place March 29 - April 1.
Men's Golf Holds Lead at Linger Longer Invitational
Heading into the final day of play, our men's golf team holds a one-stroke lead at the Linger Longer Invitational, being played at Great Waters Golf Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee. As a team, the Tide is 8-under par 570 (283-287) and Nick Dunlap holds the individual lead after 36 holes of play following his second-round score of 6-under par 66. Third-round action can be followed on Golfstat.
Baseball and Softball Open SEC Play
Our baseball and softball teams began Southeastern Conference play over the weekend with baseball taking one at No. 2 Florida and softball winning the opener over Arkansas. Both teams will face UAB in midweek action - baseball on Tuesday and softball on Wednesday - before returning to league competition later in the week. Baseball is set to host No. 22 Kentucky Friday - Sunday while softball travels to Tennessee. Tickets for the midweek games and baseball's weekend series with the Wildcats are available for purchase through the Alabama Ticket Office.
Rowing Wins 10 of 15 Races at Cardinal Invitational
Our rowing team took 10 of 15 races over the two-day Cardinal Invitational in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, competing against Navy, Louisville, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Indiana and Clemson. Coach Putyrae was proud of how all the crews pushed for the distance, with some coming from behind to secure wins. We will return to Oak Ridge on April 1, taking on Tennessee in our final dual race of the season. A pair of invitationals April 7-8 and 21-22 follow before heading to Austin, Texas for the Big 12 Championships.
University Spotlight
For the eighth consecutive year, The University of Alabama was recognized as a Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation, which recognizes colleges and universities that promote healthy trees and conservation efforts. In addition, a Southern Magnolia tree located on the Bryce Preserve was recognized as the largest in the state of that species, making it an Alabama Champion Tree.
