A three-run third for UGA proved the difference in Saturday’s contest
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama baseball suffered a 3-0 loss to 10th-ranked Georgia on Saturday afternoon at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The game two result clinched the series for the Bulldogs and moved the Crimson Tide to 23-17 on the season, 8-9 in Southeastern Conference play.
Both offenses were held at bay for a majority of the afternoon with Georgia plating three in the third for the game's only runs. Alabama had the bases loaded with two down in the seventh but a flyout to the warning track in right ended the rally and kept the Tide off the board. Jonathan Cannon (7-1) picked up the win, tossing a perfect game through 5.0 frames with six strikeouts, while Jack Gowen earned his eighth save of the year with a scoreless ninth.
Jacob McNairy (4-2) suffered the loss on Saturday despite a quality start for the Crimson Tide. The senior allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts over 6.0 innings of work. He gave up three hits and issued one walk leading to three runs in the third, but limited UGA to four hits and no runs the rest of his time on the mound. McNairy handed the ball off to the duo of Jake Leger and Luke Holman, who held the Bulldogs scoreless for a combined 3.0 frames with Holman contributing a pair of strikeouts.
From Head Coach Brad Bohannon
"Obviously, a tough loss today. The wind's blowing in and it's really hard to score on days like that, so it's more important than ever to smother the other team with strikes. They got the big hit in the third, and we didn't really get any hits – that's the story of the game. Their starter, Jonathan Cannon, was outstanding and would have been good against any team today in any ballpark. We were overmatched for his five innings, but (Georgia) went to the bullpen and we got some guys on base, we just couldn't get the big hit."
