TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama rowing hit the water on a beautiful Saturday morning in Tuscaloosa, competing against Eastern Michigan in its first home spring race of the season.
In the first race of the day, Alabama's 3V8+ held off a late push from Eastern Michigan's 2V8+ to earn the win in 7:57.46, just over four seconds ahead of the Eagles' crew. The Crimson Tide swept the 4s race, with its 1V4+ boat leading the pack at 8:21.30 with Alabama's remaining boats following behind all ahead of Eastern Michigan's lone 4 boat. In the final race of the day, the Tide's 1V8+ posted a winning time of 7:20.61 and the 2V8+ finished second in 7:33.92.
Alabama's 1V4+ and 2V4+ crews sported the Tide's newest boats, named prior to the race in honor of Marie Robbins and Finus Gaston for their support and dedication to the program over the years. Saturday's events also featured the senior day ceremony as the Crimson Tide honored its 13 seniors and graduate students.
From Head Coach Glenn Putyrae
"It was a beautiful morning on the Black Warrior River. We started the morning thanking two people who were instrumental in the elevation of our team with the boat dedication ceremony recognizing Marie Robbins and Finus Gaston. Then the team demonstrated their progress in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. Finally, we had the opportunity to recognize our 13 seniors for the impact they have made on our program. It doesn't get much better than that! It was a great environment for racing and celebrating Alabama Rowing. We really appreciate all of the hard work of our sports communication, marketing, and event staff for making the day so successful."
