Big SEC Championships Run for Swimming and Diving
Our swimming and diving teams enjoyed a tremendous showing at the recent SEC Championships in Knoxville, Tenn. Our men took second place, their best finish since 1987, while the women were third, their best finish since 1994. We led the league with 11 gold medals along with two Southeastern Conference records and three SEC Championships records. Head coach Margo Geer's squads are now gearing up for the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Atlanta. The divers will compete at the NCAA Zone B Championships March 7-9, the women will be at the NCAA Championships March 16-19, while the men's NCAA Championships will be March 23-26.
Crimson Tide Medals and Breaks Records at SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships
Our men's and women's track and field teams tallied seven medals and broke two school records and a meet record at last weekend's SEC Indoor Championships held in College Station, Texas. Our men took third place, while the women were eighth in the team standings. Mercy Chelangat won the women's 5,000 meters with a new SEC Championship record, Bobby Colantonio Jr. took top honors in the men's weight throw and Isaac Odugbesan took gold in the men's shot put for the third-consecutive time. The NCAA Championships are next for head coach Dan Waters' crew, just up the road in Birmingham, at the Birmingham Crossplex, March 11-12. We hope those in the area can join us and cheer on the Tide.
Hall of Fame Honors for Coach Mainz
More congratulations are in order for Coach Jenny Mainz, who became the first woman inducted into the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic Hall of Fame last week. The Blue Gray, now in its 74th year, has hosted some of the top collegiate tennis athlete at the annual event, which is held in Montgomery. Well-deserved, Jenny!
Softball Stays Unbeaten
Softball is off to an incredible start, holding a 15-0 record following wins over Nicholls, Southeastern Louisiana, Northwestern State, Louisiana Tech and No. 20 Louisiana at the Mardi Gras Mambo. The team is back in action Wednesday for a midweek matchup with UAB in Tuscaloosa before hosting Texas and Miami (Ohio) in the T-Mobile Crimson Classic Friday – Sunday. It's shaping up to be a beautiful weekend in Tuscaloosa, and we look forward to having another outstanding crowd on hand at the Rhoads House!
Baseball Back for 10-Straight
Following its first road trip of the season, baseball returns home for its next 10 games, beginning with UT Martin on Tuesday. We then welcome Troy on Wednesday before a weekend series with Murray State. Middle Tennessee, North Alabama and Binghamton are all on next week's schedule, so we encourage you to take advantage of the great weather we have coming our way and join us at The Joe to cheer on the Tide!
Senior Day Success
Our men's and women's basketball teams enjoyed successful Senior Days in Coleman Coliseum over the weekend with wins over South Carolina and Vanderbilt, respectively. It's always bittersweet as we realize the end of the collegiate road is near for our seniors, who pour so much into our programs and who we have all enjoyed getting to know and be around for the last few years. The men have one more at home on Wednesday against Texas A&M before closing out the regular season on Saturday at LSU, while the women get SEC tournament play underway on Wednesday against Auburn. Looking forward to hopefully lots more basketball before this season is in the books!
Golf Season Underway
Our men's and women's golf seasons are in full swing as both are currently on the road and in progress at their second tournaments. Last week, our men's team had a runner-up finish at the Watersound Invitational, led by Canon Claycomb, who claimed medalist honors. This week, we're all a little jealous of the team as it's playing in the Cabo Collegiate in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Our women had a fourth-place finish at the Moon Golf Invitational last week after surging up the leaderboard on the final day with the lowest round of the tournament. This week, our squad is in Hilton Head at the Darius Rucker Invitational, which began today and runs through Wednesday. All three rounds will be broadcast on the Golf Channel.
Rowing Ranked No. 15 in Preseason Poll
Following a 13th-place finish at last year's NCAA championships, our rowing team enters the 2022 season ranked 15th and is set to begin its spring regatta slate Saturday against Eastern Michigan where we will recognize our seniors. Races start at 9 a.m. on the Black Warrior River.
Gymnastics Senior Day and Elevate This Weekend
Our gymnastics team brings its regular season to a close this weekend with a pair of meets. We'll celebrate our seniors on Friday with a 7 p.m. CT dual meet against Arkansas in Coleman Coliseum before traveling to Huntsville, Ala., for our annual Elevate the Stage meet where we'll face Auburn, Georgia and Arkansas, all for the second time this season. The team will then have a weekend off from competition before traveling to Birmingham for the SEC Championships on Saturday, March 19. It's an exciting time of year and we can't wait to cheer them on into the championship season.
Soccer Spring Schedule Announced
Our soccer team has five matches scheduled for the spring, beginning with Lipscomb at home on Saturday. The next three will be played on the road at Kennesaw State (March 27), Vanderbilt (April 9) and Auburn (April 15) before closing out the season with Mississippi State in Tuscaloosa on April 22.
University Spotlight
Autherine Lucy Hall was dedicated Friday in a wonderful ceremony outside the steps of the building bearing Dr. Autherine Lucy Foster's name. An incredible story of courage and inspiration for generations to come.
#RollTideFriday
This week's #RollTideFriday features take us to both hot and cold climates. First, we have Professor E in sunny Jamaica, and secondly, we have Jace Kinney bundled up in all things Alabama in chilly Colorado.
