TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama women's basketball team dropped to Kentucky, 67-63, in a close game down the stretch Sunday, Feb. 13 in Coleman Coliseum. The Crimson Tide fell to a 12-11 (3-9) record on the season, while the Wildcats improved to 10-11 (3-8) in 2021-22.
Megan Abrams led the team in scoring for the ninth time this season, recording 21 points on 7-of-17 from the field and connecting on all six of her attempts at that line. Nine of her 21 points came in the fourth quarter, helping secure her sixth 20-plus point scoring game of the season. The senior also added four rebounds and a steal in 36 minutes of action.
JaMya Mingo-Young had the fourth double-double of her career, scoring 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 2-of-3 from the arc, and 2-of-2 from the line, and 10 rebounds. She stuffed the stat sheet against the Wildcats, adding four assists and two steals. Brittany Davis continued her season-long scoring effort for the Crimson Tide on 12 points, tacking on six rebounds, two steals and an assist.
It was a back-and-forth game for all 40 minutes, with Alabama leading more than 20 minutes and Kentucky leading more than 12 minutes. The pairing included 11 lead changes and eight ties. UA began the game hot, making nine of its 14 attempts from the field for 64.3 percent shooting in the first quarter, however UK's full-court press proved to be problematic as the game carried on. The Crimson Tide went 23-of-59 for 39.0 percent shooting, while the Wildcats went 27-of-72 for 37.5 percent shooting.
Kentucky outscored Alabama, 18-10, on points off turnovers, and 17-8, on second-chance points.
From Head Coach Kristy Curry
"Just credit Kentucky. I thought they were able to make a few plays down the stretch, and we were not. But what a great game back and forth. The difference in the game, obviously, was eight-plus points for Kentucky off turnovers and a nine-plus points on second chance. That's 17 points in the SEC that you can't give up and expect in a close game to win. So, we'll continue to work on those things and continue to get better. I thought we missed some wide-open looks, on a day where the ball doesn't go in, you can't have that 17-plus balance in those two areas and be successful."
