
Alabama Swimmers Close World Championships in Melbourne

Three Crimson Tide swimmers and two alumni combined to earn four top-15 finishes, including three top-10 finishes and one medal
MELBOURNE – Alabama distance swimmer Kensey McMahon led the Crimson Tide contingent of three current swimmers and two alumni at the 2022 FINA World Short Course Championships in Melbourne.
McMahon earned her first career international medal in the 1,500-meter freestyle, taking bronze with a time of 15:49.15 that she posted in the early heats. McMahon entered Friday's finals with the fastest time from prelims, which was strong enough to earn her a third-place finish upon the conclusion of the top-seeded heat that evening.
The Crimson Tide was represented by Diana Petkova (Bulgaria), Kensey McMahon (USA), Victor Johansson (Sweden) along with alumni Anton McKee (Iceland) and Kristian Gkolomeev (Greece).
Alabama at the World Championships
- Kensey McMahon took bronze in the 1,500-meter freestyle (15:49.15) to earn her first career international medal
- Diana Petkova reached semifinals in the 100-meter individual medley (59.45) to take 11th place, earning the highest individual world championships finish in her career
- Alumni Anton McKee and Kristian Gkolomeev both earned 10th place finishes in the 200-meter breaststroke and 50-meter freestyle respectively
- Current UA swimmers and alumni combined to earn four top-15 finishes, including three top-10 finishes and one medal

- The Alabama swimming and diving team will return to action for a two-day meet as they host Texas and Ohio State Jan. 13-14 at the Alabama Aquatic Center for their final home competition of the season
