
Ozzie Newsome to Represent Alabama as Part of 2022 SEC Football Legends Class

Newsome helped the Tide to a 42-6 record and three SEC titles during his time at the Capstone
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ozzie Newsome was selected to represent The University of Alabama as part of the Southeastern Conference Football Legends Class of 2022, the league office announced on Thursday. Newsome is one of 14 former stars who excelled on the gridiron and helped write the rich history of the sport at Alabama.
The class will be honored at the 2022 SEC Football "Weekend of Champions" Dec. 2-3 in Atlanta, Ga., highlighted by the annual SEC Legends Celebration on Friday, Dec. 2 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta. The group will also be recognized prior to the SEC Football Championship Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 3.

Split End (1974-77)
- One of the most decorated pass-catchers in Crimson Tide history
- A two-time All-SEC honoree (1976, 1977) and a first team All-American in 1977
- Finished his career at UA with 102 receptions for 2,070 yards and 16 touchdowns
- Helped the Crimson Tide to a 42-6 record and three SEC titles
- Named the Alabama 'Player of the Decade' for the 1970s
- Was selected in the first round by the Cleveland Browns
- Spent 13 seasons in the NFL and is considered one of the greatest tight ends in league history
- A two-time first team All-Pro selection (1979, 1984), a four-time second-team All-Pro honoree (1980, 1981, 1983, 1985) and the NFL's Man of the Year in 1990
- Named to the NFL's All-Decade Team for 1980 and earned a spot in the Cleveland Browns Ring of Honor
- Selected to both the College Football and Pro Football Hall of Fames
