
Alabama’s Mercy Chelangat Named USTFCCCA Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year

Chelangat has now earned back-to-back Scholar Athlete of the Year honors in to addition taking first and second at the NCAA Championships over the last two seasons
NEW ORLEANS – Alabama standout Mercy Chelangat was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Women's Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row after finishing runner-up at this fall's NCAA Championships.
Chelangat was a 2021 Honda Award finalist and the Southeastern Conference and NCAA South Region Runner of the Year. The two-time SEC Champion was also named the 2021 SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Chelangat, Flomena Asekol, Esther Gitahi, Victor Kiprop and Hillary Cheruiyot were all named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic squad, while both the Tide men and women earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors.
Additionally, Chelangat and Asekol earned All-America honors in 2021, while Asekol, Chelangat, Cheruiyot, Gitahi and Kiprop earned NCAA All-South Region honors. In addition to Chelangat being named the SEC Runner of the Year, Kiprop was named the SEC Freshman of the Year.
