
Alabama Track and Field Breaks Two School Records and Six Meet Records at Samford Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Alabama track and field team broke a pair of school records and set six meet records at the Samford Invitational, held in the Birmingham Crossplex Friday in Birmingham, Ala..
Mercy Chelangat opened her indoor season by bettering her own school record in the 5,000 meters, crossing the line with a time of 15:34.82, shaving more than two seconds off her previous mark set in 2020. She also won the event with a Samford Invitational record. Chelsea Igberaese bettered the school record in the women's weight throw for the second week in a row, picking up the win and setting a new meet record with a toss of 20.94 meters.
Chelangat's and Igberaese's efforts accounted for two of Crimson Tide's 11 wins on the day.
Top-Three Finishes for the Crimson Tide
- Mercy Chelangat (15:34.82) won the women's 5,000 meters with a school and Samford Invitational record to open her 2022 indoor season
- With a toss of 20.94 meters, Chelsea Igberaese bettered the school record in the women's weight throw for the second week in a row and came away with the win
- Kieran McKeag won the men's weight throw with a meet-record mark of 21.15 meters
- Flomena Asekol (4:42.30), Jami Reed (4:42.47) and Macy Schelp (4:58.97) went 1-2-3 in the women's mile, with Asekol setting a Samford Invitational record
- Emmanuel Ineh (7.59 meters), Quincy Scott (7.47 meters) and Julian Collins (7.12 meters) gave the Tide a 1-2-3 sweep of the men's long jump, with Ineh's mark setting a new meet record
- Gavin Saacke (14:55.99) ran a meet record to pick up the win in the men's 5,000 meters
- Kerri Walsh (9:52.17), Haley Wright (9:55.50) and Alexa Cruz (9:56.66) posted another 1-2-3 finish for the Tide in the women's 3,000 meters
- Arthur Graham won the men's mile with a 4:10.81, while Chanice Spicer won the women's 200 meters with a time of 24.91
- Na'Taja Ballard (55.96) and Margaret Conteh (57.77) took first and third in the women's 400 meters
- Alabama went 1-2 in the distance medley relay with Jacob Lamb, Gabe Serrano, Ryan Maseman and Brady Barton taking top honors with a time of 10:08.00
- Nickolette Dunbar (15.80 meters) and Igberaese (14.80) finished second and third in the women's shot put, while Jerimiah Evans (18.47 meters) and Chago Basso (17.93 meters) went 2-3 in the men's shot put
- Louis Martinez took second in the men's pole vault after clearing 4.97 meters
- Corde Long posted the top collegiate time in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a 7.99, finishing just behind former Alabama All-American Ruebin Walters to take second overall
- Amari Brown took second in the women's 60 meters with a time of 7.43
- The Tide took second in the men's 4x400-meter relay with Ryan Maseman, Brady Barton, Jace Jones and Eliud Kipsang combining to post a 3:23.36
- Sophie Spada took third in the women's 800 meters after posting a 2:15.98
