Leah Kunde scored the lone goal for the Crimson Tide
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Alabama soccer team (3-3-0) fell 3-1 in a Sunday night road match against the Memphis Tigers (5-0-1). Leah Kunde netted the Crimson Tide's lone goal of the night and her second goal of the season.
Despite both Alabama and Memphis each having a few chances at goal, the majority of the possession was held in the midfield for the first half of the game. Memphis opened up the scoring in the 39th minute as Lara Kazandjian crossed the ball into the box and found the head of Tanya Boychuk. Less than a minute later, freshman forward Leah Kunde answered back for Alabama, finding the ball in the box off a corner and tapping it into the goal through traffic. The teams exited the first half holding each other to one goal apiece.
Alabama and Memphis both came out with intensity in the second half. Alabama had multiple chances in the Tiger's territory but could not find a way to capitalize. In the 66th minute, Boychuk scored her second goal off another header with the ball coming from Momo Nakao. Memphis continued to pressure as forward Mya Jones received a cross from Jocelyn Alonzo and rocketed a shot into the net in the 73rd minute. Despite Alabama holding the advantage in shots in the second half, the team was unable to answer back.
From Head Coach Wes Hart
"Tough weekend. Not the results we were looking for. It certainly wasn't for a lack of effort though! We played hard and created enough chances in both games to get results, but didn't do enough with them. We'll let these results sting for a bit and then we've got to get back to work. We don't have time to feel sorry for ourselves. We've got the sixth-ranked team in the country coming to town on Thursday and then conference play is just around the corner. Some big opportunities ahead of us. We've got enough quality on this roster to win a lot of games still."
