Former Alabama players shine in the opening week of the 2021 NFL season
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The first week of the 2021-22 season in the National Football League wrapped up on Monday. Below is a look at some of the highlights from week one by former Crimson Tide players currently in the NFL.
The Dallas Cowboys received standout performances on both sides of the ball from two former Crimson Tide players in the NFL's season opener. Offensively, Amari Cooper hauled in a team-high 13 catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, defensive back Trevon Diggs recorded one tackle, two pass breakups and an interception.
On Sunday, former Alabama teammates reconnected as Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts found Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith for an 18-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter of their 32-6 win over the Atlanta Falcons. Hurts capped his day at 27-of-35 for 264 yards and three touchdowns while adding 62 yards rushing. Smith hauled in six passes for 72 yards and a touchdown in his rookie debut.
Jonathan Allen also had a strong showing on Sunday. The defensive tackle filled his stat sheet with three tackles, three quarterback hurries, one tackle for loss and one sack for the Washington Football Team.
Week one wrapped up with a bevy of former Crimson Tide players facing off in primetime. Ravens defensive backs Anthony Averett and Marlon Humphrey provided a solid effort for their team. Humphrey led Baltimore in tackles, recording nine and breaking up one pass, while Averett collected seven tackles and added one pass breakup and an interception to his stat sheet. For the Las Vegas Raiders, running back Josh Jacobs carried the workload, tallying 10 carries for 34 yards and two touchdowns.
