The Crimson Tide women’s golf team is fourth through 36 holes at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate
LAKE ELMO, Minn. – Polly Mack fired off eight birdies Tuesday at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate, aiding the Alabama women's golf team in recording the lowest score of the day by two strokes. In one of the most talented fields in women's golf, the Crimson Tide surged four spots up the leaderboard to find fourth place after posting a 4-under-par 284 in the second round, with just 18 holes remaining at Royal Golf Club in Lake Elmo, Minn.
Mack made her presence known Tuesday morning, boasting a pristine 5-under-par 31 on her front nine, which included more birdies (five) than it did pars (four). Her streak continued into her back nine, collecting seven birdies through her first 13 holes. The veteran concluded the second round with a 5-under-par 67, which is seven strokes better than her first round, while it also ties her second-lowest, single-round score during her time at the Capstone.
She leads the Crimson Tide on the individual leaderboard, tied for sixth on a 3-under-par 141 going into her final 18 holes.
While Benedetta Moresco remains in the hunt for a top-15 finish herself, she found adversity during the second round. Despite recording a better-than-perfect, 1-under-par 35 on her first nine holes, the sophomore logged four bogeys and a double on her final nine holes to bring a 4-over-par 76 to the clubhouse. Even though, thanks to her impressive 4-under-par 68 in the first round, Moresco is tied for 14th (even-par 144) on the individual standings ahead of the final round.
Emilie Øverås recorded a second-round, 3-over-par 75, while the junior sits at tied for 32nd on a 3-over-par 147 tournament total.
Angelica Moresco turned her tournament around Tuesday, recording a solid even-par 72 after a pair of birdies and a couple of bogeys. The graduate student is tied with teammate Sarah Edwards for 38th on a 5-over-par 149 tournament total going into her final 18 holes.
Edwards, a Florida Gulf Coast transfer, bounced back from a first-round 79 with an impressive second-round 70. The junior recorded an imposing five birdies on her scorecard, including starting and ending her round with a mark below par.
The Crimson Tide will tee off on hole No. 1 Wednesday at 8 a.m. CT for the first time this week, paired with Texas and Arizona.
FROM HEAD COACH MIC POTTER
"It was the lowest round of the day by two shots, and we even saw first place for a while, which we haven't seen since the fall of 2019. That is encouraging. We showed we have the ability to shoot low and put those performances together all at the same time and be a competitive team. You won't find a more competitive field than this one, so we'll enjoy it for a little while, but we'll put it behind us and get ready to go tomorrow and move back toward the top. Polly Mack had a great round. One poor shot is all she hit, and it cost her a double, but she had it going for a while."
