The honors come less than a week after the Crimson Tide competed in their first-ever national championship
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Just two days after the conclusion of the 2021 NCAA Rowing Championship in Sarasota, Fla., Alabama rowing head coach Glenn Putyrae was named the 2021 Regional Coach of the Year, while his staff was named the 2021 Regional Staff of the Year, it was announced by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association on Tuesday afternoon.
The Crimson Tide rowing team is fresh off its first-ever appearance at the national championship after being selected as one of 12 at-large teams, combined with 10 automatic qualifying teams, to make up the 22-team regatta. There, the Tide finished in 13th place on 55 points, topping a four-way tie thanks to the performance by the I Eights in the petite final.
Putyrae is in his third season at Alabama's helm but has developed a program that has achieved a series of new successes in just a few short years, including helping the Tide reach its first top-10 ranking in program history this season. Putyrae, who guided the program to back-to-back second-place finishes at the 2019 and 2021 BIG 12 Championships, is aided by a staff that has more than 16 years of combined coaching experience in assistant coaches James Mulcahy, Grace Barbara and Madison Keaty.
