
Alabama Concludes Day One of 2021 SEC Men’s Golf Championships

The Crimson Tide is in eighth overall after carding an opening round total of 4-over par 284
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Alabama men's golf team concluded the opening round of the 2021 Southeastern Conference Men's Golf Championships on Wednesday, closing with a team score of 4-over par 284. The Crimson Tide will enter Thursday's second round in eighth overall.
It was the first of three days of stroke play at the annual event, which is being held on the par-70, 7,005-yard Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course. After the 54 holes of stroke play conclude, the top eight teams will advance to match play. The quarterfinal and semifinal matches will take place on Saturday, while the championship match will be held Sunday.
Tenth-ranked Georgia leads the field at 5-under par 275, two shots better than No. 19 Tennessee (277) and three ahead of No. 22 Arkansas (278) – the only teams to finish day one below par. Both No. 15 Vanderbilt (281) and No. 23 LSU (281) are tied for fourth with No. 14 Auburn (282) two shots ahead for the Crimson Tide after the opening 18 holes of play.
Round One Highlights
- JP Cave and Davis Shore led the Crimson Tide charge on the day, both carding even par rounds to end day one in a tie for 15th overall
- Playing in his first SEC Championship and seventh tournament this season, Cave collected his seventh round of par-or-lower this season, which ranks fourth on the team
- Meanwhile, Shore's 70 was a welcome sight as the Knoxville, Tenn., native was playing his first competitive round since an injury sidelined him on Feb. 27 in the second round of the LSU Invitational
- Thomas Ponder also had a solid opening round, closing the day in a tie for 28th with a 1-over par 71
Other Performers
- Wilson Furr, who began the round even through his first 11 holes, is in a tie for 41st with a 3-over 73 after recording bogeys in three of his last seven holes
- Canon Claycomb also went 3-over par on the back nine and finished the day in a tie for 48th with a 4-over par 74

Next Round
- Alabama will tee off Thursday's second round at 6:30 a.m. CT (7:30 a.m. ET) and will be paired with South Carolina and Texas A&M
