No. 44 Alabama Women’s Tennis Travels to No. 20 Auburn for Saturday Match
3/5/2021 4:03:00 PM | Women's Tennis
The two teams haven’t met in dual match competition since the 2019 season after last season’s match was canceled due to COVID-19
AUBURN, Ala. – A year ago at this time, Alabama women's tennis was preparing to get on the road to take on the Auburn Tigers. It was a match that never came to be.
The COVID-19 pandemic shutdown collegiate athletics and the Crimson Tide's season. Instead of coming up with a new schedule this season, the Southeastern Conference decided for a do-over, the same schedule as 2020, but a chance to finish it off this year.
Last weekend's matches at Kentucky and Vanderbilt marked the last contests Alabama got to play in 2020 and the Tide's match at No. 20 Auburn this Saturday marks the chance to get back on track and continue its lost schedule.
Head Coach Jenny Mainz Said
"At this time last year college athletics were halted due to the COVID pandemic. We were busy preparing for our next match, getting all the details organized to hit the road for Auburn. I'll never forget telling the team that our season was abruptly ended. I'll never forget the look on their faces. We're so blessed to have the opportunity to represent Alabama and the SEC and compete as a team again. We have a renewed enthusiasm and refreshed perspective. So many people have suffered loss and heartache during the last year. College athletics and college tennis are an incredible way to raise people's spirits and give them something to cheer for. It's an opportune time to realize how fortunate we are to be involved in college sports and to take advantage of the opportunities bestowed upon us. The leadership in the SEC guided by Greg Sankey and at UA guided by Dr. Stuart Bell and Greg Byrne has been impressive. Their vision and focus to get all of us back on the court and field is commendable."
