The Crimson Tide freshmen is growing her game while preparing for her future career
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – When Alabama women's tennis rookie Anne Marie Hiser arrived in Tuscaloosa this fall, she not only fulfilled a long-held dream, she also got her first glimpse of what she wanted to do after her Crimson Tide tenure comes to an end.
"I would love to be a college tennis coach after I graduate," Hiser said. "I love the atmosphere that comes with college tennis and I love being able to work with people and teach them."
She also found standout role models on the UA campus in head coach Jenny Mainz and assistant coaches Jonatan Berhane and Keith Swindoll.
"All three of our coaches makes it easy for me to see myself doing what they do," Hiser explained. "They make the experience amazing and help everyone on the team work towards being their best."
For the Dallas, Ga., native it wasn't just that the Tide's coaching trio were helping her improve on the court.
"They care about my tennis but, most importantly, they also care about how I am as a person and how I am doing," Hiser said. "They go out of their way every day to make sure all of the girls on the team are doing well and they are there for us if we need anything."
Tennis was always a Hiser family affair. Her parents were more than just her biggest fans.
"My mom traveled around the U.S. with me every weekend, taking me to tennis tournaments and my dad would practice with me late at night after he got home from work," Hiser said. "They have been my biggest supporters and without them I would not be here at Alabama pursing my childhood dream of playing college tennis."
Hiser and her Crimson Tide teammates are back in action this weekend with a pair of home matches. They will face Tulane on Friday at 1 p.m. CT and TCU on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT.
Alabama is 7-1 coming into the weekend, including a 7-0 win in its last match on Wednesday against Troy.
If matches are played indoors, there will be no spectators allowed. If the matches are played outdoors, due to health and safety considerations in addition to the current guidelines, attendance at Alabama tennis home competitions is on a first-come, first-serve basis until reaching capacity. Facial coverings must be worn at all times unless eating or drinking.
