Alabama, Moresco continue to lead after 36 holes of final fall tournament
WEST POINT, Miss. – The expression "moving day" proved to be just another catchphrase Tuesday, as Benedetta Moresco and the No. 14 University of Alabama women's golf team defended their leads in the second round of The Ally at Old Waverly Golf Club.
Moresco broke yet another school record, while the No. 14 Crimson Tide recorded a 3-under-par 285 in the second round for a 13-under-par 563 tournament total. The Tide continues to lead the touted field through 36 holes, separating itself from its opponents by at least four shots with just one round remaining.
Moresco continued to anchor the lineup through day two at the final fall tournament, collecting eight birdies for a 6-under-par 66. It marked the second-lowest round in her career, only behind her 9-under-par 63 from the opening round Monday.
The sophomore boasts a 15-under-par 129 tournament total, which is a school record for the lowest 36-hole total. The honor was previously held by Jiwon Jeon, who recorded a 12-under-par 130 at the The Schooner Fall Classic in 2018-19. The school record is Moresco's second of the tournament, after her 63 in the first round set the program standard for the lowest first round and tied the program standard for the lowest round overall and lowest round against par.
Moresco leads the 72-person field after the second straight day of action, while her closest competitor is five strokes back.
The Ally, which is the last of four tournaments for the Crimson Tide this fall, features 11 teams, including five teams ranked in Golfstat's top 25. The field consists of No. 14 Alabama, No. 3 Arkansas, Auburn, No. 7 Florida, host Mississippi State, Kentucky, LSU, Missouri, No. 12 TCU, Tennessee, No. 16 Texas A&M and Vanderbilt.
Florida remains in second place on a 9-under-par 567, while host Mississippi State moved up to third place on a 4-under-par 572.
Emilie Øverås paced the lineup for most of the afternoon, peaking at three-under through 12 holes. Despite concluding her round with a pair of bogeys and a double on the par-4 No. 18, the junior finished the second round with six birdies for a 1-over-par 73. Meanwhile, she climbed more than 10 spots up the individual leaderboard to crack the top 30 on a 3-over-par 147 tournament total.
Playing her sixth straight round of competitive golf, Polly Mack rallied a round under par this afternoon. Just two days removed from qualifying for the LPGA Q Series, Mack dropped a six-pack of birdies to record a 1-under-par 71 to force herself into the top 15 on a 1-under-par 143 tournament total.
Angelica Moresco turned in a 3-over-par 75 Tuesday, going even par on the front nine and three-over on the back nine. Her even-par tournament total is tied for 19th.
Rounding out the lineup, Sarah Edwards recorded a 7-over-par 79 in the second round. The junior is tied for 55th on a 9-over-par 153.
Competing as an individual, freshman Isabella van der Biest matched her first-round 73 with a second-round 73. The rookie is in the hunt for the first top 25 finish of her career, nestled at tied for 25th on a 2-over-par 146 ahead of the final round. Also competing as an individual, Carolina Caminoli posted an 8-over-par 80 Tuesday.
Alabama will return to the course for the final round Wednesday, which features a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. CT.
FROM HEAD COACH MIC POTTER
"Benedetta is such a good putter, and these greens are pretty quick, but they're true if you get a break and speed together, which she is good at. Her wedges have also been so good. Making the turn, she hit the ball six inches from the hole with her pitch on No. 9, and then at No. 10, she hit it a foot from the hole. So, when you hit it close, you're going to make some birdies, between that and rolling the ball well with the putter. The thing I love about her is she is the same no matter the situation. She treats each shot with the respect it deserves and to the best of her ability, no matter where she stands relative to par or relative to the field. It's a good lesson for our whole team to learn, and she is setting a good example."
"The message for the team is to play as well as you can, play your own game and don't worry about the scoreboard. I just want to stress to them that they have to play their game. Each shot is important and if we treat it with respect all day, we will be fine, and someone will have to come beat us if we do that. I don't want them to do much differently tomorrow than what they've been doing. We made a few mistakes today, but the course was set up differently. We have to be defensive in putting, and we're handling that well. We have to understand scoring. We can't always be aggressive. Sometimes you have to take par and get a birdie on the next hole."
