STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Alabama women's soccer team battled for 110 minutes before ending in a 1-1 draw against the Mississippi State Bulldogs at the Mississippi State Soccer Field. The Crimson Tide move to 1-0-1 after Friday night's Southeastern Conference road opener.
Felicia Knox got the scoring started in the opening minutes, knocking in her first collegiate goal in the fifth minute, marking her first goal in a Crimson jersey.
From there, the Alabama defense took over. The Bulldogs managed just four shots over the opening 45 minutes of action, two which were nabbed by junior transfer goalkeeper Mckinley Crone.
Play remained quiet for a majority of the remaining 85 minutes, before the Bulldogs' lone goal came the last second of regulation via junior Hailey Farrington-Bentil. Through two overtime periods, both squads fired off a pair of shots a piece, but no luck in finding the back of the net.
From Head Coach Wes Hart
"Tough one to swallow. We were a bit naive closing the game out. Shame on me for not addressing that situation at some point over the past few weeks, I'll take the blame for that. Certainly have to give credit to Mississippi State though, they made it hard on us all night. I am proud of the way we ended overtime though, down a player against a team that was emotionally charged on the road and we grinded out a point. We will lick our wounds, learn from it, and move on to the next one."
Behind the Box Score
- Crone got just her second start of her Alabama career against Mississippi State, where she left the Bulldogs scoreless for 89 minutes.
- Freshman Tanna Sanchez-Carreto picked up her second yellow card in the 96th minute of overtime when she slid into an opposing defender.
- The booking earned Sanchez-Carreto a suspension for card accumulation and permitted Alabama to play the remaining overtime down a player with 10.
- UA played a total of 18 players in Starkville.
- The all-time series between the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs extends to 13-8-4 after Friday night's stalemate.
