First and foremost, I hope this edition of the Byrne Notice finds you all well and in good health. We're wrapping up week four of working from home, and while we certainly understand the need for social distancing, I know we are all looking forward to returning to our preferred normal and seeing each other in person. Continue to take care and stay safe, and let's all play our role in staying apart, so we can come back together sooner. Roll Tide!
World Health Day
On Tuesday, we joined many in recognizing our healthcare workers on World Health Day. To those of you out there on the front lines helping us battle through this pandemic, we thank you. We commend you for your commitment, dedication, courage and sacrifices every day.
National Student-Athlete Day
Monday, we celebrated National Student-Athlete Day and members of our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee shared what their sports and academic pursuits mean to them via social media. It was amazing to see what being a part of the Crimson Tide means to them.
Classroom Champions
As part of National Student-Athlete Day, the Crimson Tide Foundation put together a video celebrating the six men and women who earned SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors for their respective sports this season. The video gave all six the chance to share in their own words what pursuing excellence and balance in both academics and athletics means to them and what they love about being part of The University of Alabama. Additionally, I want to thank every donor whose generosity has supported the efforts of our amazing student-athletes. For more information about the impact of your support, please visit CrimsonTideFoundation.org.
Kenzie Wright to Represent United States at Arnold Palmer Cup
Kenzie Wright was recently named to the 2020 United States team for the Arnold Palmer Cup. The event was originally scheduled to take place July 3-5, but it has now been rescheduled for December 21-23 at Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando. Congratulations, Kenzie!
Swimming and Diving All-Americans
We put 22 swimmers and divers on the 2020 All-America teams, with 11 men and 11 women earning a combined 57 honors. It was the most for the women in 35 years and the most for the men in 30. This is just another highlight in what has been a great first year for head coach Coley Stickels and the Crimson Tide.
Regional Gymnastics Staff of the Year
Our gymnastics staff was honored with several year-end regional honors this week. Dana Duckworth was voted the WCGA Region 1 Head Coach of the Year, Bill Lorenz and Ryan Roberts were named assistant coaches of the year and Robin Kelley was recognized as administrator of the year. It marked the first time that Alabama has been awarded all three accolades in the same year.
University Spotlight
Dr. Philip Gable, a psychology researcher here at UA, was recently awarded a federal grant to study how people's emotions influence their response to the spread of COVID-19. This research is part of the National Science Foundation's effort to start non-medical, non-clinical-care research that can be used to explore how to model and understand the spread of the virus to inform and educate about the science of transmission and prevention.
#RollTideFriday
Appreciate everyone participating in the #SocialDistancing version of our #RollTideFriday campaign! This week, we've got Kyle Nelson with four-legged friends Bailey and Deuce and Kayla Mae in head-to-toe Alabama.
