The Crimson Tide dominated the Golden Hurricane on Friday night in Tuscaloosa
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama bounced back in a big way by defeating Tulsa, 6-1, on Friday night inside the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Indoor Tennis Facility. The Crimson Tide (7-2) earned its seventh win of the non-conference schedule while extending the Golden Hurricane (5-3) losing streak to three games.
The Tide won all but one singles match, including senior Zhe Zhou who came out victorious on court two and improved to a perfect 8-0 in singles play for the season.
From Coach Husack
"We emphasize practice a ton and our guys have a strong desire to win," said head coach George Husack. "I think they're understanding that we can't always control certain outcomes, but what they can control is to put themselves in the best possible position to win through competing, through putting their opponents in uncomfortable positions and tonight up-and-down the row of courts that's what we saw."
Doubles
Tulsa grabbed the first match on court one 6-3, before senior Edson Ortiz and freshman Marcelo Sepulveda Garza evened things up with their 6-4 win on court two against Hing/Kamdem. Junior Sam Fischer and senior Alexey Nesterov battled it out on the third and final court, eventually winning the tiebreaker 7-2 over Cenoz/Hampe to get the Tide on the scoreboard.
Singles
- Junior Patrick Kaukovalta quickly doubled the Tide's lead with his 6-1, 6-2, victory over Ezequiel Santalla. Later on in the match, senior Zhe Zhou and Ortiz closed out their straight set matches within seconds of each other to clinch, 4-0. Ortiz' victory was a career-best as he defeated No. 26 in the nation, Kody Pearson, 6-3, 6-1.
- Nesterov dominated Juan Pablo Cenoz, 6-4, 6-2, to make it 5-0 in favor of the Tide. Tulsa got on the board with a victory on court six, before junior No. 103 Riccardo Roberto closed out his match in the third set tiebreaker, 10-7, to make the final, 6-1.
