Video Tribute to Wilbur Jackson and John Mitchell
Fifty years ago, Wilbur Jackson and John Mitchell broke barriers and changed the Alabama football program forever. Plans were in the works to celebrate and honor these two trailblazers on campus this fall, however COVID-19 put those to a halt for 2020. While we anxiously await the day that we can properly recognize them in Tuscaloosa, our team here did an outstanding job putting together their story in a video. We'd also like to thank Roman Harper for being a part of this piece and narrating.
Football Closes out Regular Season on Saturday; SEC Championship Bound
The regular season is about to come to a close for football as we play our final game at Arkansas on Saturday. We will then turn our attention to the postseason next week as we gear up for the Gators in the 2020 Southeastern Conference Championship game on Saturday, December 19.
Basketball Seasons Underway
Both our men's and women's basketball seasons are well underway with four games in the books on each side. The women are off to a 4-0 start and had an incredible comeback on Saturday at Oklahoma State. After coming up short in the first game of the Maui Invitational, which was actually played in Asheville, N.C. this year, our men's team bounced back with a pair of quality wins against UNLV and Providence. Season and single-game ticket options are available for our home women's games, and the next opportunity to catch them in Coleman is on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
Kira Lewis Jr. Drafted 13th by New Orleans Pelicans
Congratulations to Kira Lewis Jr. for being selected 13th overall in the 2020 NBA Draft by the New Orleans Pelicans. It was great to be there in Huntsville to celebrate Kira with his family, friends, coaches and teammates, and we cannot wait to see him shine at the next level like we know he will.
Crimson Tide Earns All-Time Best NCAA GSR Score
The NCAA came out with its Graduation Success Rate (GSR) numbers the other week, and our overall score of 93 was the best we've had in the 16-year history of this important metric. We also had seven of our programs post a perfect score of 100, while 13 earned better than a 90. Our continued success when it comes to the GSR shows the commitment our faculty, coaches, staff and most importantly our student-athletes have when it comes to the ideal of academic excellence.
30 Alabama Athletics Earn 2020 1A FAR Academic Excellence Award
We are very proud of the 30 Crimson Tide graduates who were recently honored by the 1A Faculty Athletics Representatives (FAR) board. The 1A Far Academic Excellence Award goes to those who graduate with a 3.80 or better cumulative grade point average. Our 2020 total includes four All-Americans and nine Academic All-Americans. This is just another example of the high standards that our student-athletes strive for every day in the classroom.
The Crimson Tide and the SEC Career Tour
This past week a half dozen of our student-athletes joined with others from across the league to take part in the annual Southeastern Conference Career Tour, which, as with most things this year, was virtual. The upside of the event being Zoom-based is that more of our folks were able to take part. Usually we are able to send two student-athletes, while this year Champ Allison (men's track & field), Cole Brown (men's swimming & diving), Alba Cortina Pou (women's tennis), Emily Gaskins (gymnastics), Jeremy Gschwendtner (men's tennis) and Darcy Jennings (rowing) all got to learn and grow during the three-day event that included SEC staff and alums, professionals from a variety of companies and a session with renowned leadership expert Dr. Tim Elmore. This is another tremendous program that allows our student-athletes to get the most out of their collegiate experience and prepares them for the next steps in their respective journeys, proving once again that in the SEC, it just means more.
Champions Club
Over 80 percent of the seats have been committed, but it's not too late to secure your seats in the Champions Club for the 2021 Alabama Football season. Located on Bryant-Denny Stadium's west side, the Champions Club offers sideline views from the end zones to 25-yard lines, and patrons enjoy designated stadium entry, an all-inclusive catered buffet in the enclosed, air-conditioned club along with access to alcohol storage lockers and a pouring room among other amenities. Explore the Champions Club experience by checking out this video. Contact the Crimson Tide Foundation at 205-348-9727 or ctf@ia.ua.edu to secure your seats before they sell out.
University Spotlight
This time of year, many of us carry on family traditions, and the story of this one started here on campus in 2014 by Tatiana Carrasquilla is a tradition that has benefitted hundreds of families since then. While attending The University of Alabama, Tatiana created "Swipe Away Hunger" in partnership with Bama Dining, which is a program that asks students to donate their unused guest meal plans, so meals can be made into Thanksgiving dinners for those in need in West Alabama. After she graduated, her younger brother Juan took over and after he graduated, little sister Laura has carried the torch. This year, more than 900 swipes were collected. Great job by the Carrasquilla family.
#RollTideFriday
Our first #RollTideFriday photo for this week comes to us from Jeremy Reid here in Tuscaloosa. We had to travel a bit more for the second pic, which was submitted by Michelle Mielke in Wisconsin.
