Tide closes out fall season with 35th annual event
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men's golf team will close out the fall season when they host the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, which will be played at the par-70, 7,204-yard Old Overton Club in Vestavia Hills, Ala. It marks the 35th year that the Crimson Tide has hosted the JPNI.
Alabama has experienced recent success at the annual event by winning the team title in six of the last eight years and 10 times overall – each of which have come over the past 14 years. Alabama has seen five players capture medalist honors over the years, including David Kirkpatrick in 1991, Joseph Sykora in 2006, Mark Harrell in 2007, Hunter Hamrick in 2009, Thomas in 2012 and Robby Shelton in 2015.
The 2020 tournament will consist of 18 holes of play starting Sunday afternoon, followed by second and third rounds on Monday and Tuesday morning, respectively.
ABOUT THE JERRY PATE
- The host and tournament namesake Jerry Pate is one of the most successful professional golfers to have worn the Crimson and White. The former Alabama golfer and Champions Tour player proudly lends his name and plays an active role — from team selection to presenting the awards trophies
- Pate and Alabama have hosted this event since 1986. Originally, the tournament was held in Pate's hometown of Pensacola, Fla. He moved the tournament in 1992 to Birmingham's Shoal Creek, where it remained for five years. In 1997, the tournament moved to its current home, the Old Overton Club
THE ALABAMA LINEUP
- Alabama's starting five include seniors Wilson Furr and Davis Shore, along with sophomores Canon Claycomb, Tyler Lipscomb and Thomas Ponder.
- Four of the five UA golfers were a part of the Tide's victory at Blessings.
- Ponder leads the team with a 70.17 per round average, just ahead of Shore's 70.67 scoring average.
- All five members of the Tide's starting five average 72.00 or below (Furr: 71.17, Claycomb: 71.33, Lipscomb: 72.00).
LAST TIME OUT
- After winning the season opener, The Blessings Collegiate, the Alabama men's golf team returned to action at the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate which was held Oct. 25-27.
- The Crimson Tide carded three consecutive rounds below par and finished with a team score of 18-under par 834 (279-278-277) to place ninth overall.
- The Crimson Tide ended the three-day, 54-hole event by recording a 7-under par 277 during Tuesday's final round, which was the lowest single-day score across UA's two tournaments this fall.
- Thomas Ponder paced the Crimson Tide by carding a career-low 18-hole (65) and 54-hole (204) while also recording the best individual finish (t-8th) of his two-year career.
- Davis Shore also earned his ninth-career top-20 finish as he tied for 11th overall at 8-under 205 (68-68-69). It also marked the first time in his UA career that he collected three sub-70 rounds in the same an event.
