
Alabama Men’s Golf Cards 4-Under Par Opening Round in Day One of Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate

Crimson Tide collects fourth consecutive sub-par round with season-low 276 on Sunday
VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. – Three golfers rank among the top-12 individuals to lead the Alabama men's golf team in Sunday's opening round of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. The Crimson Tide carded a day one total of 4-under par 276 which marked a season-best 18-hole score and was the fourth consecutive sub-par round shot by UA dating back to the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate two weeks ago.
Alabama is in fifth after 18 holes played, trailing clubhouse leader Georgia which carded a team score of 15-under par 265 to take a five-stroke lead over second place Vanderbilt (270). Auburn (273) is in third, while Tennessee (274) holds a two-stroke advantage over the Tide to round out the top five teams.
The three day, 54-hole event features all 14 Southeastern Conference teams and is being held on the par-70, 7,204-yard Old Overton Club.
ROUND ONE HIGHLIGHTS
- Both Wilson Furr and Thomas Ponder carded rounds of 3-under par 67 to lead the way for the Crimson Tide on day one. The duo will enter Monday's second round in a tie for seventh overall
- Tyler Lipscomb returned to the lineup with a 2-under par 68, which marked the best 18-hole score of his career, and is in a tie for 12th overall
- Davis Shore (74) and Canon Claycomb (76) round out the Alabama lineup in 63rd and 68th, respectively
LOW SCORES
- Golfers took advantage of a lift and place rule to help improve their lie
- The opening round featured 28 players record rounds in the 60s while 41 shot even par or better
- Georgia's Trent Phillips carded an opening round score of 8-under par 62, which included five birdies, two eagles and one bogey to take the overall lead
- Eight teams shot below par in the opening round, while 10 are at even par or better
FUN FACT
- Lipscomb is tied for first among all individuals in the tournament with seven birdies
