
Men’s Tennis Readies for Tune Up with No. 4 North Carolina and South Alabama in Alabama Spring Shootout This Weekend

Players from the Crimson Tide will take on the Tar Heels and Jags in a round robin individual singles and doubles tournament
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men's tennis team is set for the Alabama Spring Shootout on Friday, Jan. 10 – Sunday Jan. 12 inside the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Indoor Tennis Facility in preparation for the 2020 dual match season which is set to begin next week. The Crimson Tide welcomes in No. 4 North Carolina and South Alabama to Tuscaloosa this weekend.
All three teams will have players compete in singles and doubles matches throughout the weekend. Individual singles and doubles champions will be announced at the conclusion of the round robin play.
Event Details
- Alabama will play two rounds of doubles matches against South Alabama beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
- On Saturday, all three teams will start with one round of doubles beginning at 1 p.m. CT. Following the doubles matches, there will be two waves of six singles matches.
- To close out the event on Sunday, the teams will begin doubles at 10 a.m. CT and then finish up with another two waves of singles play after doubles competition has concluded.
- Lineups and matchups will be announced 30 minutes prior to play beginning each day.
- Individual players with the best overall win-loss record will be recognized at the conclusion of Sunday's play.
Team Information
- The Crimson Tide returns eight of 10 players from the 2018-19 roster, including three seniors in Edson Ortiz, Alexey Nesterov and Zhe Zhou. Ortiz was named First Team All-SEC in 2019.
- Junior Riccardo Roberto finished the fall as the No. 96 singles player in the country after compiling a 7-3 individual mark. Roberto and Nesterov are also the No. 40 doubles pair entering the 2020 season.
- Individually, Nesterov and junior Sam Fischer ended the 2019 fall season with the best singles records on the team with a 10-3 mark respectively. Nesterov also had the most doubles wins with a 12-1 record.
