Men’s Tennis Concludes Competition in the Alabama Spring Shootout

The Crimson Tide won 3-of-4 doubles matches and 8-of-9 singles matches
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men's tennis team concluded the third and final day of the Alabama Spring Shootout inside the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Indoor Tennis Facility Sunday afternoon. The Crimson Tide ended the day winning 3-of-4 doubles matches and 8-of-9 singles matches.
Seniors Zhe Zhou and Alexey Nesterov were named the co-winners of the Crimson Singles portion of the event, both going 2-0 in their respected matches. UNC's Mac Kiger and Josh Peck were crowned champions of the Crimson Doubles as they also went undefeated throughout the weekend.
Round-by-Round
- In the last round of doubles, Alabama won 3-of-4 matches. Junior Sam Fischer and freshman Marcelo Sepulveda Garza found an easy victory over Blissard/Collard (USA), 6-1, as did junior Jeremy Gschwendtner and Zhou over Coutinho/Petko (USA), 6-2. No. 40 Nesterov and junior junior Riccardo Roberto came out on top after a close match against Delcour/Bugaj (USA), 7-5. Senior Edson Ortiz and junior Patrick Kaukovalta fell short to Kiger/Peck (UNC), 6-2.
- In the first round of singles, Alabama won 5-of-6. Fischer downed Coutinho, 6-1, 6-0 to get things started, followed by a win by Gschwendtner over Collard (USA), 7-5, 6-2. Nesterov came out victorious against Marzol, 6-3, 6-2, and Kaukovaulta topped Harrison (UNC) in a close fight, 7-6 (3), 7-5. In a three-set battle, Ortiz won against Cernoch (UNC), 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, but No. 96 Roberto ultimately wasn't able to pull off the comeback against Kiger (UNC), 7-5, 6-4.
- In the final round of singles, the Crimson Tide went a perfect 3-for-3, all done in two sets. Sepulveda Garza defeated Bugaj (USA), 6-1, 7-6 (3), Zhou came out on top against Delcour (USA), 6-3, 6-4, and lastly freshman Avi Shugar downed Petko (USA), 6-2, 6-1.
