The Crimson Tide shut out both Kennesaw State and Alabama A&M in its first dual matches of the year
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's tennis team started its season by picking up two victories against Kennesaw State, 7-0, and Alabama A&M, 7-0, on Sunday inside the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Indoor Tennis Facility.
From Coach Mainz
- "I thought we started off the morning a little bit nervous. I thought that we would, it's to be expected in the first match," said head coach Jenny Mainz. "But, all in all we had a really good day. We played start to finish. We really talked about finishing matches, playing with confidence, working on the things we needed to work on to better, and for the most part I do think we did that. I thought in the second match we lost our focus a little bit, but it's a long day and we set some short-term goals so that we could stay on track and again for the most part, I think we did a pretty good job. It was a good first day and I'm proud of the team. We are getting better, that's the key."
Doubles (vs. KSU)
- The No. 51 duo in the nation in freshman Isabella Harvison and junior Moka Ito cruised to a 6-2 win to give the Tide the advantage to start doubles matches. Both courts two and three battled until the end, with seniors Jacqueline Pelletier and Luca Fabian clinching the point, 7-5 over Baker/Reilly to give Alabama the 1-0 lead.
Singles (vs. KSU)
- The Crimson Tide dominated singles play with five of the six matches finishing in straight sets. Freshmen Ares Teixido, Sasha Gorchanyuk and Harvison captured their first career dual match singles wins, while Ito and senior Ann Selim also picked up straight-set victories. Senior Alba Cortina Pou concluded the match with a 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 win over Elle Baker to make the final, 7-0.
Doubles (vs. AAMU)
- The Crimson Tide went 3-for-3 to quickly give the team a 1-0 advantage. No. 51 Harvison/Ito swept Bozhko/Boyd, 6-0, as did Selim/Teixido against Ghare/Rengil. To finish off, Cortina Pou/Gorchanyuk came out victorious against Ruiz Diaz/Woods, 6-1.
Singles (vs. AAMU)
- Alabama continued to dominate in singles play winning all six matches in straight sets. Selim and Fabian got things started with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 sweep of their opponents. Teixido, Harvison, and Ito earned the next three wins, bringing the overall score to 6-0. Gorchanyuk claimed her first set with a swift 6-1 win but found herself in a close 4-4 match-up in the second set. She was ultimately able to pull away to win the second set, 6-4.
