Crimson Tide set to compete at three-day, 54-hole event over the weekend
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 21-ranked Alabama men's golf team opens the 2019-20 season on Friday when it begins play at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Dalton, Ga. This year's tournament will once again be played at the par 72, 7,180-yard Farm Golf Club.
The tournament is slated for 54 holes over three days (Friday through Sunday) and boasts another strong field this year. In addition to the 21st-ranked Crimson Tide, the 2019 Carpet Capital features a total of 15 teams, five of which are ranked in the Preseason Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll, while an additional three squads are receiving votes to be ranked.
TOURNAMENT NOTES
- Head coach Jay Seawell's team will have a new look to it as the season tees off, as all three freshmen (Simms Abney, Tyler Lipscomb and Thomas Ponder) qualified and will make their Crimson Tide debut. The trio made up one of the top signing classes in all of collegiate golf.
- Junior Wilson Furr, who is coming off a strong summer of play in which he earned three top-five finishes in major amateur tournaments, will anchor the five-man lineup. Furr was the only person on the roster to play in all 12 events last season and led the team in stroke average (72.35) and average vs. par (+1.06).
- Sophomore Frankie Capan III will round out the Tide's starting five. Last season at the same event, Capan made his UA debut and carded a career-best 66 during the second round of play.
- The Tide also welcomes back junior Davis Shore, who will compete as an individual on the weekend. It will mark his first competitive tournament since last February when he was sidelined with an injury.
- Alabama has topped the leaderboard at the Carpet Capital Collegiate four times (2006, 2007, 2010 and 2018), while former standout Justin Thomas won individual medalist honors in 2011. The Tide also holds the 18-hole course records (276 in 2006).
- Alabama is set to tee off Hole No. 1 at 7:50 a.m. CT (8:50 a.m. ET) and will be paired with No. 17 Clemson and North Florida.
