The Tide earns its first SEC conference win of the season
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Alabama soccer team defeated the Tennessee Vols, 2-1, in double overtime at the Regal Soccer Stadium. This marks the first conference victory for the Tide.
The Crimson Tide started the first half with a strong offensive performance, outshooting the Vols 7-5 with four on frame. Sophomore Riley Mattingly had two notable one-on-one shot opportunities against the Tennessee goalkeeper, Lindsay Romig, but both balls were saved. There was no score from either team at halftime.
Within the second half, freshman Serena Pham got Alabama on the board in the 70th minute with a successful penalty goal, also earning her first career goal. However, Tennessee responded no more than three minutes later and tied the game with Alicia Donley finding the back of the net. Both teams remained gridlocked at the end of regulation.
Nealy Martin earned the game-winning goal in the 104th minute with a header inside the box. Freshman Carlee Giammona earned the assist with a header across the box to Martin.
From Head Coach Wes Hart
- "I am so incredibly proud of the team today. It was a fun game to be a part of. Our quality of depth was key for us. We were able to bring fresh bodies off the bench and eventually wore a very good Tennessee team down. It was a great response after a tough loss to South Carolina and a perfect way to head the week as we look ahead to Mississippi State."
Behind the Win
- Alabama outshot the Vols, 29-11, with 12 being on target. Mattingly led the team firing six shots, followed by junior Casey Wertz with five.
- The Tide earned one more corner kick than Tennessee, 6-5. Alabama currently ranks #1 in the SEC in corner kicks earned, 96 in 11 games played.
- Freshman goalkeeper AJ Crooks earned her second career win, collecting three saves on the match. This is also her first career start and win against an SEC opponent.
- This is the seventh win against Tennessee in program history, and the third when playing in Knoxville.
