Former Alabama players shine in the opening week of the 2019 NFL season
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The first week of the 2019-20 season in the National Football League wrapped up on Monday. Below is a look at some of the highlights from week one by former Crimson Tide players currently in the NFL.
A trio of former Alabama running backs put up big numbers in week one. Derrick Henry totaled 84 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries while also adding a 75-yard touchdown reception to his stat sheet in the Tennessee Titans' win over the Cleveland Browns. Also on Sunday, Mark Ingram carried the ball 14 times for 107 yards and added two scores in his first game with the Ravens, playing a key role in Baltimore's dominant 59-10 win over Miami. Rounding out the group on Monday Night Football was rookie Josh Jacobs. The Oakland tailback ran the ball 23 times for 85 yards and found the end zone twice, while tacking on one catch for 28 yards in his NFL debut.
The former Tide receivers were highlighted by Amari Cooper. The Cowboys wideout posted a big day in Dallas' 35-17 win over the New York Giants. Cooper caught six passes for 106 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown reception, to help Dallas start the season with a win. Also notching touchdown receptions was the Atlanta Falcons' duo of Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley, with each wideout recording one score apiece.
On the defensive side of the ball, cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick provided a solid effort for the Cincinnati Bengals. Kirkpatrick recorded five total tackles, including a sack for a nine-yard loss, and added a fumble recovery. Baltimore Ravens defensive back Marlon Humphrey helped his team to a victory over the Miami Dolphins. Humphrey recorded one tackle for loss to go with a pair of pass breakups and his first interception on the season. Linebacker C.J. Mosley also had a solid performance in his first game as a New York Jet. Mosley recorded five tackles, two pass breakups, a fumble recovery and punctuated his day with a 17-yard interception that was taken back for a touchdown.
A former Tide special teamer also shined on opening weekend. JK Scott punted nine times totaling 428 yards to average of 47.6 yards per boot and registered a 63-yarder, his longest punt of the day. That kick moved Chicago deep into its own territory and played a key role in helping the Packers come away with a 10-3 win on opening night over the rival Bears.
