Jaylen Waddle named to the 2019 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama football team put in two hours of work in full pads on Tuesday afternoon inside the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility.
Tuesday's session marked the midway point in a series of 20 practices for the Crimson Tide as it prepares for its season-opening contest with Duke in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Ga. The matchup between the Crimson Tide and Blue Devils is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 31 with a 2:30 p.m. CT kickoff on ABC.
Also on Tuesday, Tide wide receiver Jaylen Waddle was tabbed as one of 42 players on the 2019 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list.
The Houston, Texas, native is a threat every time he touches the ball as both a wideout and a returner, Waddle is coming off a standout first year in Tuscaloosa. The 2018 season saw him finish as the SEC Freshman of the Year and earn Freshman All-America honors thanks to impressive numbers in the passing and return games. Waddle averaged 18.8 yards per catch thanks to 45 receptions for 848 yards and seven touchdowns. He led all SEC first-year receivers in receptions per game (3.1) and receiving yards per game (56.5) and saw 30 of his catches result in an Alabama first down or touchdown. Waddle added 16 punt returns for 233 yards and one score with his 14.6 yards per return ranking second in the SEC and fifth nationally.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award is presented to the top offensive player in NCAA Division I football who exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity. Nominees must either be born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas high school and or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.
