Crimson Tide senior cards a 1-under par 71 to earn an automatic qualifier spot
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama women's golfer Kenzie Wright qualified for the 2019 U.S. Women's Amateur, which will be held Aug. 5-11 at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss.
Wright, a rising senior, carded a 1-under par 71 to earn one of the seven automatic spots out of the Southlake, Texas, qualifier, which was held earlier this month, at Timarron Country Club.
"This was my first time to qualify for the women's amateur and I'm super excited to be able to play," Wright said. "I've been very close to qualifying the last couple of years, so it was great to finally get through. I've heard great things about the course, and I can't wait to get out there. Being able to see my teammates playing in the semifinals and finals last year was awesome so I'm hoping to follow in their footsteps this year."
The McKinney, Texas, native will step up and provide veteran experience for the Crimson Tide in the 2019-20 season, as she competed in all 10 tournaments this past year. Her best finish came at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational where she placed second overall.
The 119th U.S. Women's Amateur at Old Waverly Golf Club is the most prestigious championship in amateur golf and will feature a 156-player field from 24 sectional qualifying sites. Last year at the U.S. Amateur Championship, Alabama was well represented by former Crimson Tide standouts Kristen Gillman and Jiwon Jeon. The duo squared off in the championship match, as Gillman took 7-and-6 triumph over Jeon to etch her name on the Robert Cox Trophy.
