Crimson Tide will enter third and final round just two shots back of the cut line to earn a spot in match play
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 36-ranked Alabama women's golf team improved nine strokes from Wednesday's first round total to vault three spots up the leaderboard – the biggest jump by any of the 14 teams on Thursday – at the 2019 SEC Women's Golf Championships. The Crimson Tide will enter Friday's final 18 holes of stroke play in a tie for 10th place overall with a two-day total of 17-over par 593 (301-292) on the par 72, 6,274-yard Greystone Golf and Country Club Legacy Course.
With its 36-hole total, the Crimson Tide finds itself only two strokes back of the cut line for match play, which features only the top eight teams advancing and begins with the quarterfinals on Saturday morning.
After 18 holes, No. 12 Florida owns the team lead at 9-under par 567, six shots ahead of second place No. 11 South Carolina (573). Both the Gators and Gamecocks are the only two teams to under par as a team through the first two rounds of the championship. Sixth-ranked Arkansas (578), No. 40 Georgia (579), No. 14 Auburn (582), No. 4 Vanderbilt (584), No. 35 Ole Miss (588) and LSU (591) round out the top eight teams.
In all, 10 of the league's 14 teams are ranked among the nation's top-50 according to Golfstat.com.
Individually, juniors Jiwon Jeon (73-72) and Kenzie Wright (76-69) lead Alabama, as both golfers are currently in a tie for 15th overall with identical 36-hole totals of 1-over par 145. Jeon has been the Tide's most consistent golfer this week, compiling five birdies and five bogeys (including one double bogey) over her 36 holes played. In fact, her 26 pars throughout the event rank as the fifth-most in the entire field. Meanwhile, Wright's second round 69 was the lowest 18-hole score by any UA golfer in this year's championship and marked her third round this season in the 60s.
Sophomore Angelica Moresco also had a solid second round as she finished at 2-under par 70 on the day, which included a bogey-free last 11 holes to go 3-under over the stretch. She will enter Friday's final round of stroke play in a tie for 27th with a 3-over 147 (77-70).
Junior Anna Reid (75-87/162) and freshman Mary Mac Trammell (87-81/168) round out the Crimson Tide golfers.
Alabama will try to move up two positions and clinch a spot in match play during its final round of stroke play on Friday. The Crimson Tide will be paired with Texas A&M and will tee off on Hole No. 10 at 8:20 a.m. CT. Admission for all fans is free. Live scoring is available throughout championship play at Golfstat.com.
