The Crimson Tide fell to the Lady Vols, 4-1, before bouncing back with a 4-0 win over JSU
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The 39th-ranked Alabama women's tennis team split its doubleheader on Sunday at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. The Crimson Tide (15-9, 3-6 SEC) first fell to No. 18 Tennessee, 4-1, before bouncing back with a shutout win over Jackson State, 4-0.
"I was disappointed with our match against Tennessee, " head coach Jenny Mainz said. "Obviously it was a great opportunity and Tennessee competes really well. They make a lot of balls, they're disciplined and when they get the opportunity to come up and be aggressive they take the first opportunity and do it. I felt like Tennessee took advantage of those opportunities and put the pressure on us."
In the first match of the day, Tennessee went up early after seizing the doubles point with wins on courts one and three.
The Tide responded in singles action as No. 69 senior Andie Daniell dominated No. 85 Sadie Hammond, 6-2, 6-2, to tie the match at 1-1. The Lady Vols quickly took the 3-1 lead with victories on courts four and six, before eventually closing it out on court five to seal the 4-1 win.
Later in the evening, the Tide took care of business in doubles play against Jackson State. The Tigers only traveled five players giving a default and a win at the No. 2 spot with juniors Alba Cortina Pou and Luca Fabian to put UA up 1-0.
The default on court six made it 2-0 in favor of the Tide heading to singles action. Cortina Pou took care of business, 6-0, 6-1, and junior Kimberley Gintrand also won 6-0, 6-1, to clinch the match at 4-0.
The Crimson Tide will return to action next weekend with two road matches first at No. 31 Florida on Friday, April 5 at 4 p.m. CT in Gainesville, Fla., before traveling to Columbia, S.C. to take on No. 4 South Carolina on Sunday, April 7 at 11 a.m. CT. Live streams of both matches will be available online.
