Alabama Distance Contingent Shines at Stanford Invitational

Gilbert Kigen, Noel Rotich and Rebecca Buteau all posted career-best times Friday night in Palo Alto
PALO ALTO, Calif. – In some late-night, West Coast distance racing, Alabama track and field had a quartet of runners post fast times in the Stanford Invitational Friday night.
In the 10,000-meter Invite, senior Gilbert Kigen took third place with a time of 28:20.28, less than two seconds out of first place. Senior Alfred Chelanga took 13th overall and eight among collegians in the race, his first outing since last spring, with a time of 28:43.71.
It was a career-best time for Kigen, after running a 28:37.31 at this meet a year ago. It was the third fastest time of Chelanga's Crimson Tide career, following a career-best 28:04.95 at the 2017 Stanford Invitational and a 28:32.66 last year.
Freshman Noel Rotich was second in the third section of the men's 5,000 meters, posting a personal-best time of 14:03.62.
Rebecca Buteau took 13th in the third section of the women's 5,000 meters after crossing the line with a time of 16:36.72. The sophomore's time ranks her eighth all-time at Alabama and is the fastest time for UA since 2015.
